Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (Mar. 30, 2010) The Nova Southeastern bullpen provided seven and one-third innings of three hit relief as the Sharks defeated No. 24 Florida Tech 7-3 in non-conference action at the NSU Baseball Complex on Tuesday evening. The win, NSU's 11th consecutive at home, improves their record to 20-15 on the season while Florida Tech falls to 23-10.
The Panthers from Florida Tech got to Sharks starter Ryan Whelan (Jr., Boca Raton, Fla.) early, scoring two runs on five hits in an inning and two-thirds. NSU went to their bullpen early and it proved to be a wise move, as junior Nick Avila (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) retired the next seven batters in order.
Junior Isaac Hicks (Ft. Myers, Fla.) picked up where Avila left off in the fifth inning, holding the Panthers hitless and allowing just one walk over three innings.
The bullpen allowed the Sharks to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, as NSU scored four runs on four hits. The big hit of the inning was a two run blast off the bat of All-America right fielder Brayan Valencia (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.).
Sean Tighe (So., Hobe Sound, Fla.) took over on the mound for NSU in the eighth inning to close the door on the Panthers. He allowed one run on two hits and struck out three.
Senior second baseman Eric McCans (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) led the Sharks at the plate, going 3-4 with a RBI. Senior third baseman Rhys Roberts (Parkland, Fla.) and junior outfielder Matt Seese (Ocala, Fla.) also had multi-hit efforts for NSU. In addition to Valencia, junior catcher Haven FitzSimmonds (Loxahatchee, Fla.) also homered.
The Sharks remain at home to host Eckerd in a three game SSC series, beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 1st at the NSU Baseball Complex.
